Affiliate networks and what they do

Affiliate marketing networks provide their advertisers (often known as Merchants) with a gateway to large numbers of individual affiliates (sometimes known as publishers).

The networks, of which there are around 20 in the UK at present, help to facilitate the mutually beneficial relationship between merchants and publisher whereby affiliates receive a fee for each sale, customer acquisition or lead which is made as a direct result of traffic referred from advertisements (and, most importantly, links) on their websites.

It is ultimately a loyalty program between you and the affiliate with the network operating as a facilitator and intermediary.

Your affiliates will become your virtual sales force driving new traffic and new customer acquisitions. Ultimately you pay your affiliates only when a sale or lead (depending upon the parameters you stipulate at the beginning of the process) has been generated. In essence you are only ever paying for results.

The affiliates themselves attract traffic in a number of ways, typically through paid search, search engine optimisation, content websites, email marketing, blogs and forums. The majority of affiliates used to rely on paid search. However, consolidation and maturity within the sector has forced them to ‘add value’ to the user experience through unique content.
